Physical Education
Physical Education builds a base for physical, mental and social development. Fitness, motor skills, self-esteem, confidence, positive attitudes, leadership, sportsmanship and team play develop these areas. The P.E. program uses a wide range of activities that emphasize participation and having fun over competition. Young children are introduced to locomotor and non-locomotor skills, parachute activities to develop teamwork, and hand/eye skills using balls, rings, and scarves. Fitness is emphasized in all grade levels by teaching stretching, strength, and conditioning techniques. Children then learn about a variety of games such as handball, volleyball, tennis, basketball, soccer, softball, kickball, and track/field.
In every grade good sportsmanship and an emphasis on fairness and cooperation help students to develop body, mind, and social skills. Students are given positive reinforcement and encouraged to demonstrate respect for others before, during, and after activities. Students are expected to work cooperatively in a group, building awareness of social appropriateness and conflict resolution in physical activities.
In the Lower School, students attend P.E. three times a week in grades 2-4, and two times a week in Kindergarten and 1st grade. Our 5th through 8th grade students attend P.E. every other day.
