An Historical and Present-Day Perspective

The goal of a Trinity visual arts education is to expose students to the tools required to understand not only the media and processes involved in creation but the intrinsic value visual arts has lent human kind through the ages.   Through these efforts, students begin to recognize the meaning and impact of the visual world in which they live, unravel the essence of artwork, and appraise its purpose and significance.

At Trinity, students experiment enthusiastically with art materials and investigate the ideas presented to them through visual arts instruction. As they move, year to year, through our arts curriculum, students learn how the elements of design such as line, shape, form, texture, color and space can be controlled as they express themselves visually. Themes for art projects, while geared to age appropriate expectations, often correlate with other studies intensifying the student’s overall experience.

Trinity sets the studio experience in a cultural and historical context. Students visit museums, enjoy historical sites, and meet artists whose experiences and techniques help enlarge the students' understanding of the artistic process and their own capabilities.

Visual arts are taught by two full-time art instructors in two dedicated art studios located in the Trinity Center for Arts & Athletics. Because students of different ages have different skills and abilities, one studio is designated for students in Lower School and provides materials and resources relevant to the curriculum at this level. The second studio supports students in the Middle School and offers more advanced supplies and programs.  The ceramics program intersects with the curriculum of each grade.
