Discovering Talents. Developing Passions.
Music is an important part of life at Trinity.
Performing, creating, and responding to music are the fundamental music processes in which humans engage and therefore are uppermost in Trinity’s music educational philosophy. Music literature across both Lower and Middle School includes traditional Episcopal hymns, children's songs, folk songs, classical music, and music from a variety of cultures and styles. By understanding the cultural and historical forces that shape social attitudes and behaviors, students are better prepared to live and work in communities that are increasingly multicultural.
Trinity’s music curriculum for young children includes many opportunities to explore sound through singing, moving, listening, and playing instruments. Students, particularly in grades K-4, learn by doing. Reading and notating music gives them a skill with which to explore music independently and with others. Listening to, analyzing, and evaluating music are important building blocks of musical learning. Trinity Lower School students showcase their musical talents each day in Chapel, at the Christmas Pageant, and again in the spring when each class performs a Spring Musical – often tied to their Social Studies curriculum – to an audience of students, family, and invited guests.
The Middle School years, grades 5-8, are especially critical in students' musical development. The music they perform or study often becomes an integral part of their personal musical repertoire. Trinity’s choir and orchestra programs allow students to explore both their vocal and instrumental interests. Technical skills which are discipline-specific are presented by demonstration and explanation, followed by student practice with individual or sectional coaching. Those who enjoy performing can showcase their talents at All-School Chapel services, athletic competitions, and a host of other community events both on and off campus.
